A German-based shipping company christened one of its newest cargo vessels, the MV Marguerita, in Portland Harbor this past weekend.
The Portland Press Herald reports MST Mineralien Schiffahrt held a naming ceremony Sunday afternoon for the ship at Portland’s Ocean Gateway Terminal.
The vessel is named for Marguerita DeLuca, whose husband has known MST’s founder for 45 years. It is measured at 185 meters long, or roughly the size of two football fields.
MST officials say the company has transported clay slurry to the ports of Searsport and Portland for about 20 years. The clay slurry is used in Maine’s paper mill industry for specialized paper coatings.
The MV Marguerita made its maiden voyage in February. The ship first visited Portland on March 9 and returns every 25 days.
