This week’s visit of China’s holding China Merchants Group (CMG) to the Riga port gives hope that CMG is seriously considering a possibility of transportation of cargos from its Great Stone logistics center in Belarus via Riga port, said the Riga Freeport deputy administrator Edgars Suna, informs LETA.
Suna said that “it seems that this time the Riga port is seriously considered as an alternative to Klaipeda port in Lithuania that has always been geographically more favorable choice for transportation of cargos from the Minsk region”.
The port’s representative said that this time it has not been a courtesy visit or a superficial acquaintance visit. The port for the visit had prepared detailed information on the questions submitted earlier. The CMG representatives wanted to see the port’s container terminals, meet business representatives. The discussion had been professional, the Chinese representatives had been interested in practical issues.
The port said that CMG is a powerful conglomerate of state-owned companies, and its three main directions are transport and transport infrastructure development, finances and real estate. CMG is an internationally significant investor and terminal operator in the area of transport infrastructure
